This home is based on the Fullerton house on Legare Street at Lafayette Square in Charleston. John Fullerton, who built several fine houses for others, built this one for himself. Fullerton, born in Scotland, was one of the "Sons of Liberty", who met in Mazyck's pasture in 1766 to celebrate the repeal of the Stamp Act. He died on the eve of the Revolution and during the war his house was occupied by British staff officers during the period 1780-82. The home is an early example of the Charleston Single House style incorporating side yard covered piazzas. The street side contains a front entry to the piazza, while the main house doorway is actually located further down the side of the building within the piazza.
